Traditionally, a liberal arts education centers around student-focused curricula in communication, history, math, science, and other academic studies. The seven typical liberal arts studies, according to the medieval Western university, included grammar, rhetoric, logic, geometry, arithmetic, music and astronomy. These courses are designed to stimulate the mind and encourage analysis, critical thinking and open discourse. Students pursuing a liberal arts education can study a variety of different subjects and fields, often combining two or more to personalize their degree and prepare them for a career. While liberal arts programs emphasize intellectual curiosity, many graduates go on to more professionally-focused programs that will train them for the workforce.

These six liberal arts courses range from political science to modern languages and literatures to mathematics to biology to communication and society. Students will find that these courses allow them to explore their own natural interests and abilities while learning valuable skills that they can use to contribute to the world. Liberal arts students learn to become responsible citizens who can utilize their intellectual curiosity and academic foundation to analyze situations, communicate with different cultures, understand the physical and metaphysical human condition, and make changes that impact society.

• International Politics [University of Tokyo] – This course is offered through the University of Tokyo’s Arts and Sciences department. Students learn about international relations, practical international politics, communication, and the analysis of politics.
• General Biology I [UMass Boston] – Students learn the basics of biology in this course from UMass Boston.
• Faith and the African American Experience [University of Notre Dame] – This course explores African American religious history and trends, focusing on the American Diaspora.
• Differential Geometry [MIT] – Students gain an introduction to differential geometry in this course, which covers Gauss-Bonnet theorem, curvature, parallel transport and more.
• French [Carnegie Mellon University] – This French course features interactive videos to help students learn French grammar, pronunciation and conversational skills.
• Communication, Technology and Policy [University of Southern Queensland] – Offered by the Faculty of Arts at USQ, this course “explores the social and policy implications of the digitization of…telecommunications and broadcasting.”
