Eastern Kentucky University Program Review

Eastern Kentucky University is dedicated to providing its students with the personal attention they need and deserve to help them succeed in their educational endeavors and beyond. The school’s faculty-to-student ratio is low, and every attempt is made to ensure that students are not simply lost in the crowd. The university also strives to ensure that there are sufficient educational options that can fit into all students’ lives, whether with online study or weekend courses.

EKU was founded in 1874 and was then known as Central University. The school began and for much of its history was dedicated to training elementary and secondary school teachers. It was not until 1966 that the school was officially renamed Eastern Kentucky University. EKU is located in Richmond, Kentucky, but students can attend courses at four extension campuses in Corbin, Danville, Manchester, and Lancaster, Kentucky or online.

Many notable alumni have graduated from EKU including a weather anchor for Good Morning America, an Oklahoma Supreme Court justice, and a Prime Minister of Thailand. The school is known for its extremely low faculty-to-student ratio-- just 17:1-- meaning students will get the chance for a much more personal and focused educational experience. The school offers over168 degree programs and many of these programs are available not only on campus but online as well.

Distance learning courses are offered at EKU in a variety of different formats. Students will have access to programs that utilize Interactive TV, single courses and degree programs over the Internet, correspondence courses, and telecourses. The virtual campus option offers students the chance to work over the Web towards their degrees or professional certifications. Degrees are available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and can help students advance in fields like nursing, accounting and systems technology.
