The University of Illinois Program Review

The University of Illinois wants to serve the larger educational communities through creating programs that inspire new research opportunities, prepare students to be leaders in their fields of study and in the community, and by working to help society through education and the dispersal of knowledge. Students at the university will enjoy programs that encourage them to work at their full potential and that will help them emerge as confident, successful professionals.

The school was founded in 1867 through funds granted by the Morrill Act, and originally focused on the fields of Agriculture, Mechanical Arts, and Military Training. Students can still see the remains of this history in the school’s campus buildings, though students can now choose from hundreds of majors and degree programs. The University of Illinois has three branches throughout the state located in Champaign-Urbana, Chicago and in the state’s capital of Springfield. Students can take classes at these sites or work from the newly created Global Campus online.

The University of Illinois has as reputation for having outstanding academic and research programs. U.S. News & World Report has even ranked it one of the top ten public universities in the nation, and it currently stands at number 8. It is widely considered to be a “public ivy”, providing Ivy League education at public school prices. Students of the school will enjoy a wide variety of research opportunities from the biological sciences to cutting edge technology and engineering.

Students who are not native to Illinois or who simply cannot make the commute to classes each day can take a variety of programs online with the school’s Global Campus program. The Global Campus uses asynchronous online instruction and expects that students will work together to complete assignments. Students may also be required to complete practicum experiences, but these can be done at approved institutions near where the student lives. The school offers fully accredited Master's degrees, Bachelor's degree completion programs, and certificates completely online in fields like Nursing, Education and Recreation, Sport and Tourism.
