Winston-Salem State University Program Review

Winston-Salem State University wants to use technology as a way to help prepare its students for successful careers. It believes it can serve as a means to more easily allow lifelong learning, encourage career advancement and promote personal enrichment. The school also hopes to encourage its students to work not only in the classroom but in the community as well to gain leadership skills and hands-on field experience working with a diverse group of people.

Dr. Simon Green Atkins worked to found Winston-Salem back in 1892 as a university geared towards providing degrees for African-American students. Despite this history, the school today welcomes students of all racial, religious and cultural backgrounds and offers many degree programs, both at its Winston-Salem, North Carolina, campus and online.

Winston-Salem is a school that has produced students of note both in academics and athletics. Students will find themselves among the ranks of well-known public figures and alumni like Louis Farrakhan as well as writers like Stephen Smith of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Athletes who have graduated from Winston-Salem have gone on to play for a variety of professional sports teams both in football and basketball.

Students will find that distance learning programs at Winston-Salem offer them a variety of options in how the course materials are delivered. Students can take courses that require part-time class attendance or that deliver all course material though videotapes, television programs and interactive Internet communications. While there are not a large number of degree programs available online, students can still work towards earning degrees like a Master’s in Rehab Counseling or a Bachelor’s in Clinical Laboratory Science.
