California University of Pennsylvania is dedicated to helping students develop personally and professionally. The school provides opportunities for intellectual growth, career preparation, and most importantly, personal improvement. California University of Pennsylvania is located in the Borough of California, on the Appalachian Plateau, approximately an hour south of Pittsburgh. The school was founded in 1852 as an education institution serving students from kindergarten through college. In 1865, the school became a teacher preparatory school, and in 1874 was renamed the South-Western Normal School. Over the next 100 years, the school began to add more advanced and diverse degrees, and was purchased by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1983, it became known as California University. Today, the school continues to expand and houses two additional campuses in Canonsburg, PA, and in Pittsburgh, PA.
Academics at California University of Pennsylvania are offered in a large number of fields. Areas of study include Biology, Art, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, French, Fisheries and Wildlife, Geography, Industrial Organizational Psychology, Marketing, Journalism, Mentally and/or Physically Handicapped and Elementary Education, Pre-Chiropractic Medicine, Social Work, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Sociology, Public Relations and more. Students may also be able to concentrate in a specific area within these majors, allowing them a more personalized, career-focused program. Graduate programs are offered in areas like Education, Criminal Justice, Geography and Regional Planning, Athletic Training, School Psychology, Sport Management, Technology Education and more.
In addition to traditional academic programs, California University supports an online school called Global Online. This program attracts international students, military students, and working adults who require a more flexible learning environment.
