Saint Leo University Program Review
Saint Leo University relies on its Catholic, liberal arts-based tradition to educate students from all faiths and backgrounds. Its programs encourage balanced growth both spiritually and intellectually and help build valuable leadership skills. The school works to create a student-centered environment which will build in students a love of learning, commitment to their values and a desire to serve in their communities and professions at the highest level.
Located in Saint Leo, Florida, not far from Tampa, Saint Leo was chartered in 1889 when the Florida State legislature authorized the Benedictines of Florida to award degrees. The school is affiliated with two religious orders: the Holy Name Monastery, a group of Benedictine sisters, and Saint Leo Abbey, a group of Benedictine monks. Students can take classes at the school’s Florida campus or engage in a similar degree program with the school’s online classrooms.
Saint Leo was the first Catholic University in Florida, and while it holds true to its religious foundation, it accepts students from any faith. Students at Saint Leo will get a chance to work with thousands of others on the main campus, on a military base or online towards an undergraduate or graduate degree. All courses are taught by qualified instructors, as no teaching assistants are employed by the school. It is home to many well known graduates including the Nicaraguan president and actor Desi Arnaz.
Students have a couple of options when taking distance learning courses from Saint Leo. They may choose to combine online work with their in-class studies or to pursue a program that is entirely online. The online classrooms provide video and audio streamed lectures, online office hours for professors, as well as discussion boards to allow students to ask questions and interact. Current online offerings allow students to get Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at their own pace. Fields of study include Criminology, Business Administration, and Health Care Management.
